Frequently Asked Questions

How to book an appointment?

Book online through our website, call us on 0449 953 476 or email us at info@lactationnetwork.com.au. At this time we will discuss your individual needs and cost of consultation.

Are the consultations rebated by Medicare?

As Authorised midwives, we are able to offer Medicare Rebates for all Antenatal and Postnatal clients up to six weeks and 6 days post delivery.

After 7 weeks you may be able to claim part of the fee back through your private health fund, depending on fund/level of cover.

What if I can’t make my appointment?

Please ring and advise us if you can’t make your appointment as others may benefit from taking your time slot. A cancellation fee may incur if less than 24hrs notice is given.

How do I know if my baby is getting enough milk?

Monitor your babies output: 6-8 obvious wet nappies in 24hrs and whenever your baby poos it is soft and yellow/mustard in colour.

Observe your baby feeding – making sure you can see your baby doing long rhythmical sucks and swallows. Your breasts should feel softer after the feed. Your baby is gaining weight well and is mostly settled between feeds.

What is mastitis? How do I know if I have it?

Signs and symptoms of mastitis are:

  • A sore/painful area on the breast that is not normally present.
  • The area can look flushed or red.
  • You may develop a very high temperature and flu-like symptoms.
  • Your baby may fuss at the breast as your milk tastes very salty when you have an infection, and it may be difficult to get your milk to flow.

If you have a high temperature and red breast you should seek medical advice immediately as antibiotic therapy may be required.
